The beauty and elegance of the Amalfi Coast captured a piece of my heart. With its dramatic cliffs, colorful villages, sparkling blue waters, and slower pace, the Amalfi Coast is the perfect place to pause, breathe, and savor the moment. After days spent exploring historic landmarks and bustling cities, we enjoyed settling into the relaxed rhythm of coastal Italy.
Getting to Amalfi turned out to be more of an adventure than we anticipated. By this point in the trip, our already overpacked suitcases seemed to have gained weight with every city we visited. We hauled them from the train station to the hydrofoil, maneuvered them on and off the ferry, and then faced the reality of getting them to our bed and breakfast perched high above town.
My husband was convinced we could wrestle the bags up the seemingly endless winding steps ourselves. I was equally convinced that we could not. After a brief marital negotiation, I won. We overpaid for a luggage golf cart service to transport our bags and us up to the beautiful pink hillside dwelling.
When we finally arrived, our room looked noticeably smaller than it had in the photos, and between the travel day, the luggage ordeal, and our cramped quarters, we were both feeling a little irritated.
Fortunately, Amalfi has a way of improving your mood. After freshening up, we made our way back down all those steps into the heart of town and settled into an outdoor café for a leisurely Italian meal. As we enjoyed our food, we watched locals and tourists drift through the piazza, soaking in the energy of the town.
The frustrations of the day began to fade. After dinner, we strolled along Amalfi’s charming main corridor, peeking into shops, admiring the displays, and enjoying the simple pleasure of wandering with nowhere in particular to be. By the end of the evening, Amalfi had already started to win us over.
The next morning, we took a hydrofoil bound for Capri, one of the destinations I’ve looked forward to most.
To reach Anacapri, we boarded a local bus and embarked on a journey that was equal parts transportation and thrill ride. The winding roads that snake up the mountainside are astonishingly narrow, with sharp curves and barely enough room for two vehicles to pass.
It often seemed as though the buses and cars were mere inches from one another on one side and the rocky mountainside on the other. More than once, I found myself holding my breath as our driver expertly navigated turns that looked impossible. Yet somehow, everyone made it through without a scratch: a testament to the skill and confidence of the local drivers.
Once in Anacapri, we traded white-knuckle bus rides for breathtaking views aboard the Monte Solaro Chairlift. As the chairlift carries you gently above the island, the stress of the journey melts away. Below, lush hillsides give way to dramatic cliffs and sparkling blue waters, while sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean, the coastline, and neighboring islands stretch as far as the eye can see. It was one of those moments that reminded us why we travel. We love to experience places that leave us speechless and create memories we’ll never forget.
We booked a small boat cruise around the island and took in the breathtaking coastline and the famous Faraglioni rock formations rising dramatically from the sea. From the water, the views seem almost too beautiful to be real. Our captain, Mateo, and his girlfriend, Carmen, knew the special places to take us and how to maneuver the small boat in the rough beautiful blue waters. He even took us into several grottos, which were breathtaking.
Every stop on this anniversary trip offered something unique. Rome inspired us with its history and faith. Florence captivated us with its art, architecture, and timeless beauty. The Amalfi Coast enchanted us with its dramatic landscapes, sparkling waters, and invitation to slow down and savor the moment.
Our time in Italy, however, is ending a little sooner than we expected. An unexpected family medical emergency back home has made it necessary for us to cut our trip short and return home. While this wasn’t the ending we had planned, it serves as a powerful reminder that no matter how incredible the destination, family always comes first.
As we pack our bags and prepare for the journey home, we’re carrying far more than souvenirs and photographs. We’re taking with us unforgettable memories, countless adventures, and a deeper appreciation for both the beauty of Italy and the blessing of sharing this experience together. This anniversary trip exceeded every expectation, and although we’re saying arrivederci a little earlier than planned, we leave with full hearts, grateful for every moment, and hopeful that Italy will welcome us back again someday.
