After our experience in Germany in 2021 — when the pandemic meant Oktoberfest wasn’t even held at the traditional fairgrounds — we had been waiting for this moment.
Opening day. And this time, it’s the real thing.
We headed to the Oktoberfest grounds at Theresienwiese, and it didn’t take long to realize just how big this celebration really is. The fairgrounds stretch out before you, filled with enormous beer tents, carnival rides, food stands, music, lights, and thousands upon thousands of people ready to celebrate.
And you can’t overlook the outfits: lederhosen and dirndl dresses are everywhere.People dress in traditional Bavarian clothing, and visitors from all over the world come together for the same reason: to experience Oktoberfest.
OPENING CEREMONY
We began at the Spaten Tent. There was an energy that was hard to describe. Everyone seemed to know that this was more than just another day at a beer festival.
The music, the crowds, the anticipation, and the traditional Bavarian atmosphere made it feel like we were stepping into something much bigger than ourselves.
As we listened to traditional German music, the band also played some world-wide favorites like “Country Roads” and we all got up on our benches and sang along.
The Oktoberfest fairgrounds are almost overwhelming in the best possible way. Huge beer tents compete for your attention with carnival rides, games, food stands, and colorful displays.
Throughout the day, we met new friends, toasted with old friends, and were mesmerized by all that was happening.
And…there’s still a lot more to do!
Prost to that!
