Dennis and Cathy in Rome with the Vatican in the background

An Anniversary Trip: First Stop, Rome

For nearly a year, this trip to Italy has lived on our calendars and in our conversations. We booked flights, researched hotels, and compared tours. We sought the advice of friends and family who had traveled there before us. I packed and repacked, trying to choose exactly the right things to bring while fitting everything into as little luggage as possible.

We counted down the months, the weeks, and then the days. Finally, we made it.

CIAO! A LONGTIME DREAM AND A NEEDED ESCAPE

Italy has topped my travel wish list for as long as I can remember. The history, architecture, faith, food, wine, and beauty have always captivated me. For years, I imagined wandering through the streets, admiring landmarks, and experiencing the culture firsthand.

As we celebrate our wedding anniversary, this trip is especially meaningful. The past few months have brought a fair share of challenges, stressful days, and unexpected hurdles. That’s why this journey is so much more than a vacation. It gives us an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and spend meaningful time together away from the demands of everyday life.

ICONIC ROME AND STORIED HISTORY

Our first days in Rome included visits to some of the city’s most iconic sites.

We walked through the Vatican museum, gazed up at the Sistine Chapel, and climbed to the top of the Dome to see a 360 degree view of Rome! We stood in awe of the faith, artistry, and craftsmanship that have inspired generations. There are no words to adequately describe the size and beauty of St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill are unforgettable as well as Castel Sant’Angelo.

We ventured to the Trastevere section of Rome for amazing pasta, ambiance, and wine. Shared glasses of wine, unhurried conversations, laughter, and simply being together helped us to celebrate our anniversary.

Travel has a way of reminding us that life is bigger than our worries and that beauty exists even in the midst of chaos. My heart is full of anticipation for the days ahead and for the memories we’ll create along the way.

BUON ANNIVERSARIO, AMORE MIO

Happy anniversary to my husband. Here’s to adventure, good food, wine, and the best company imaginable.

And finally, here’s to experiencing Italy, a dream that’s been nearly a year in the making and a lifetime imagining.
