Life is full of decisions. Some are small, like what to cook for dinner, and others feel monumental. Choosing whether to stay in a job that you’re unsure of, end a relationship that’s no longer healthy, or even move to a new city.
For years, I found myself in certain situations or roles, unsure how to weigh my options or trust my own judgment. That’s when I discovered the power of a simple, regular practice: rating the areas of my life.
THE MOMENT THAT SHIFTED EVERYTHING
Years ago, I worked at a job that looked fine on paper.
But something felt off. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I found myself going back and forth. Should I stay or should I go? I had been sitting with that question for longer than I wanted to admit. Was it time to move on?
So I started asking myself more specific questions. Did I feel fulfilled by the work I was doing? Was I growing or just getting by? Did I feel valued and respected? How was my work-life balance? Did I feel energized at the start of the day or drained before it even began? Was this role aligned with the life I wanted to build?
These questions had been quietly weighing on me for months. This time, I faced them head-on.
THE POWER OF RATING
I decided to rate my job. I gave each area an honest score. Some aspects rated high, but more fell lower than I expected. Seeing it laid out so clearly shifted something for me. It wasn’t just a vague feeling anymore. It was insightful. And with that insight came clarity. It was time to go. The courage to leave led me to a better, more meaningful job that utilized my knowledge, skills, and abilities.
That simple exercise changed everything.
Once I saw how powerful it was, I began applying the same method to other areas of my life. I rated relationships, routines, even my own mindset. Over time, I started sharing it with others who were struggling with decisions too. I saw how impactful it could be for them as well.
I learned that life isn’t always black and white. Some decisions aren’t about good or bad. They’re about whether something fits, nourishes, and aligns with who you are and where you’re going. The rating system helped me stop overthinking and start trusting myself.
TURNING A PRACTICE INTO A PATTERN
That practice became the foundation for my guide, Rate It: Stay or Go! In it, I share how anyone can use simple ratings to make decisions more confidently and intentionally. Whether it’s your job, a relationship, your home, or how you spend your time, rating regularly gives you a snapshot of your life. It brings perspective, clarity, and the courage to choose — either to stay where you are or move toward something better.
I’ve seen it work in my life and in the lives of others. When you rate thoughtfully, patterns begin to emerge. You start to see what’s really working and what isn’t. And most importantly, you build confidence in the decisions you make today and in your ability to navigate whatever comes next.
Rate It: Stay or Go! isn’t about having all the answers or making perfect decisions. It’s about creating a habit of honest reflection, giving yourself real feedback, and using that awareness to live more intentionally.
Because at the end of the day, knowing when to stay — and when to go — isn’t just a skill. It’s a form of self-respect, clarity, and freedom.
